Happenings

We are excited about the dump area at Stung Mean Chey!  Srey Leak and  Panha from Phnom Penh Friends Church are taking ownership of the area.  Srey Leak, along with our Community Health Evangelism worker, Dara, are starting regular weekly education classes.  This month's topics are primarily Women's Health. We also screen local residents at the health care center, provide education regarding their general health, and try to encourage them to use local low cost but with adequate care clinics for their more severe or chronic conditions. On Saturdays Leak is also leading a children's ministry.  The children love her and last week over 35 attended. Panha is leading a Bible Study on Saturday for the adults and last week he had 9 people.  Panha hopes to study Creation through Christ and help build a strong foundation for the community.  Another project brewing is the investigation on why so many children do not attend school.

Our little cleft palate hare lip baby, Savanna Rak, has had his first surgery to his lip and he is beautiful.  His Mom and Dad are delighted.  The community admires the surgery. God is so great.  Mom is attending the Bible Study. Dad is working repairing shoes but Panha from PPFC is planning to take him under his wing. We were a little worried just two weeks before the baby's surgery as he was hospitalized with a cough.  The baby was fine, but in God's infinite wisdom, He knew the Mom was quite ill with a severe infection.  During the baby's hospitalization, the Mom had to have an emergency procedure and needed IV antibiotics daily.  God works in wondrous ways.  Both are doing great!!

Socheat, the now 18 year old with stage four cancer, is continuing to struggle through her chemo and radiation therapies but with many side effects.  She is a tiny Khmer young woman, but now she is too thin.  Her chemo causes many stomach problems and the radiation is creating immense pain in her mouth.  She has had to have multiple treatments for low white blood cell count which causes bone pain. We did confer with her primary oncologist and he did say that her tumor has shrunk over 50%!  Her mother sells dry fish outside of the factories and her father is a mototaxi driver using an old, old, wired together motobike. Living very simply before the disease due to low income, the time spent at the hospital with their daughter has hit them very hard financially.  It is a challenging time in their lives and they are coping with grace.  But, our hearts ache as we do not feel they have accepted Christ into their hearts completely.  Please continue to pray for God's physical and most of all, spiritual healing. If anyone has had Socheat on their heart, please feel free to send her a card or letter of encouragement.  Send them to our post office box and we will be sure to take them to her.

Personal Update

Our daughter, Meredith, is in the process of buying cute little doll house with a large yard in the town of Dalavan, Wisconsin. We are excited because we were able to see the house while we were in the U. S.--even before Meredith saw it--so we are able to visualize how she will settle in her new home.

Young Steve's new house remodel should be completed by the end of the year.  So when we return to the States, which is planned for March 2011, they will all be ready for us to visit!!

Praises
  • Savanna Rak's successful surgery and God's plan to show us that His mother needed medical attention.
  • For the reduction in Socheat's tumor and the opportunity to witness to her.
  • For our friend, Coleen, who has been a joy to us this past year.
  • For Panha and Leak, a young couple from Phnom Penh Friends Church, as they are faithfully ministering to the people at the dump area and continue their ministries at PPFC.
  • Panha has started a full time job working with a music studio--one of his great gifts is music--and the job is flexible enough that he can continue many of his ministries. It is not a Christian organization as we prayed for, but we know God is working through this process as his new employer shared that one of the reasons he hired Panha was his good character. His employer wanted Panha to be a good example and leader for the other employees.
Prayer Requests
  • Socheat, the young girl with cancer
  • For the Colfaxes as they are in the U.S. on furlough.  For Brian, their oldest son, who is at the house in Battambang.
  • For the health and evangelism programs at Stung Mean Chey.
  • For the young Monk that Steve is sharing the gospel with as they study English.
  • For the summer short term teams and servants as they prepare and come for their ministries in Cambodia.
About the Harveys
Steve and Carolyne Harvey are “finishers” in the mission world. Steve was a general contractor and Carolyne a medical social worker. After several short term mission trips, the Harveys felt drawn to the immense need of the Cambodian people to experience the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. Although they were nearing an age where most would be considering retirement, Steve and Carolyne recognized that God was calling them to go to Cambodia for two years in 2007. As that time of service was drawing to an end, they didn’t feel released from their ministry and have chosen to continue their service for an additional two years. The Harveys live in the capitol city of Phnom Penh assisting our mission with administrative tasks, accounting, hosting a small guest house for missionaries and short term teams. Steve has also been involved with construction projects including the church and training center in Phnom Penh.
